103 page diary, and typescript, document his trip across the ocean and land. An eloquent and amusing writer. He describes the difficulties aboard ship, the experience of seeing the new land, and his adventures traveling from New York to Toronto, Niagara, down through the major cities in Ohio, St. Louis, the Illinois cities of Alton, Jacksonville, Springfield, Peoria, Chicago and then back to Canada and to Niagara before coming to Beardstown, Ill. He describes the landscape, the numerous people he meets along the way, with frequent reference to and description of the "Indians". He writes in Ohio that "there were a great many temperance houses in the state." Of the people, he writes "we were amused by the ridiculous grammatical errors made by respectable looking sensible people." In Illinois he describes the beautiful wildflowers and many animals and makes frequent references to cholera. In one place he says mosquitoes were a "thousand strong" and in "great clouds."
